Metamorphosis 3D: Redefining Body Modification with 3D Printed Tattoos

Transforming Tattoos into a Multisensory Experience

As tattoos become increasingly mainstream, the need for unique and innovative body modifications grows. Jullien Nikolov, a renowned designer, has taken tattoo art to the next level with his groundbreaking project, Metamorphosis 3D. This revolutionary concept explores the use of 3D printing technology to create tattoos that engage both the visual and tactile senses, offering a truly transformative experience.

Traditional tattoos are limited to two dimensions, merely engaging our visual sense. They require a significant pain tolerance and can result in flat designs that may lose their uniqueness over time. Metamorphosis 3D aims to address these limitations by transforming conventional tattoos into three-dimensional objects using computer software.

The resulting 3D printed tattoos not only serve as decorative pieces but also provide a multisensory experience. By combining visual and tactile stimulation, these tattoos offer a new level of self-expression and personal customization. They can even be experienced by visually impaired individuals, allowing them to appreciate and engage with body art in a tactile format.

Metamorphosis 3D utilizes Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology, along with powdered elastomers, to create flexible 3D objects that can be applied to the surface of the skin. The use of bio-friendly and silicon-based adhesives from the makeup industry ensures a non-invasive and temporary application process.

The technical specifications of Metamorphosis 3D include dimensions of X: 78.48 mm, Y: 117.5 mm, Z: 15.78 mm, a material volume of 24.6013 cm3, machine space of 50.8471 cm3, and a surface area of 311.6159 cm2.

These 3D printed tattoos offer numerous advantages over traditional tattoos. They are less permanent and non-invasive, allowing individuals to wear them at their convenience. This is particularly beneficial for those facing workplace challenges or individuals who are hesitant to commit to long-term body modifications. Metamorphosis 3D provides a viable alternative that satisfies the desire for self-expression without the permanence associated with traditional tattoos.

The project was realized during the academic year 2015-2016 at the University of Lincoln in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. The research behind Metamorphosis 3D was driven by the human urge for personal customization and transformation. Humans have a long history of altering their appearance, and tattooing is just one of the many ways we satisfy this desire.

Developing the concept of 3D printed tattoos presented several challenges. The use of flexible materials for 3D printing was a significant hurdle, as was the limited access to industrial additive manufacturing equipment and the relatively low printing resolution of university 3D printers. However, ongoing research into bio-compatible and highly flexible materials, as well as advancements in printing resolution, continues to improve the quality and feasibility of this innovative body modification.

Metamorphosis 3D represents a new era in body art innovation. These 3D printed tattoos offer a unique and customizable form of self-expression, engaging both the visual and tactile senses. With their temporary and non-invasive nature, they provide a versatile alternative to traditional tattoos, allowing individuals to explore their creativity and transform their appearance without long-term commitment.

Metamorphosis 3D has been recognized for its ingenuity and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award honors designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
